We love Superheroes!

At some point in our lives, we will lose someone we truly care about. As an adult, I know what death entails and how emotional it is. My mind is able to grasp what is happening, but how do you explain death to a young impressionable child? How do you put it in a way that is easy for them to understand? My Superhero Grandpa by Michele McAvoy, is a beautiful story that covers just that. I was blown away by its simplistic, yet wonderful approach to the way a child would/should view the death of a loved one. Just imagine if in your heart of hearts, you absolutely knew that your loved one always watched over you. Imagine knowing that you had nothing to fear because your loved one will protect you the way your favorite superhero would. I have to say that as I read the book I couldn't help but smile. I envisioned my own departed loved ones as superheroes, capes and all! This book made me feel safe.

If you are struggling with trying to find a way to speak to your child/grandchild/niece/nephew about death, then I highly recommend this book. The idea that your loved one isn't truly gone, but is around in a different way, can help children cope with their loss. This book was both beautifully written and wonderfully illustrated. It is the type of book that you sit and read with your child. It helps serve as a beautiful reminder that, even though our loved ones may not physically be present, they are still very much alive in our minds and in our hearts. I very much look forward to more work from this author.
